Weekly Update: February 9-13:

Hello Parents and Students!
We had an awesome Reading Week! We had some teachers from Middle and High School as well as some of very own wonderful Elementary teachers read to the class. A BIG thank you to the parents who came in to read at such short notice. It was a wonderful surprise for your children, and I am sure you were as happy and excited to see their glowing faces. I’ll be posting pictures too, so look out for them!
THIS WEEK…
Library:
DAY 4: Thursday, February 13, 2014 is our Library day. Please make sure your child brings their books back on Wednesday so they can take new books home on Thursday.
Math:
This week, students will keep working on measuring water. We will use the data that we collected last week, of how much water is wasted in our daily lives and convert it into a graph. At home, you can measure out different liquids and ask your child to estimate how much water is in a particular container, using the words ‘milliliter’ and ‘liter’.
We will keep on practicing 2Digit and 3Digit Addition with Regrouping. In class we use cubes, counters and other manipulatives to learn different ways to add with regrouping. At home, they can use LEGO, macaroni/ pasta or any other small objects.
Literacy:
READING: This week, the students will use their reading skills for research purposes. We will
use the internet, plus the books from our Grade 2 book cart.
WRITING: Students are writing Persuasive Letters for different purposes. I will post the organizer we use at school for you to understand how to help your child at home.
WORD STUDY: Last week, I had some problems posting the Spelling Lists, therefore we will not have the Spelling Test this Day 6. Instead, the test will be postponed to the next Day 6. Reminder: We start Word Study every Day 1 and have our Word Study quiz on Day 6. This
week’s list is Consonant Digraphs (sh, th, ch (ch as /c/ and /ch/), wh) Unit of Inquiry:
We will continue to work on the properties of water, how living things depend on water, difference in availability of water on Earth and our responsibility to conserve it. We will also be doing some experiments in class for this purpose.
We will be discussing desalination and water treatment in Kuwait, since Kuwait is one of the leaders in the production of freshwater from seawater. Please talk to your child on this topic. I love it when they come to class with so much information in their heads.
Home Practice:
LITERACY: Please have your child read for at least 10-20 minutes each night. Then have them write down their story or text they read in their reading log. Please sign it to let me know that you are aware they completed their reading.
WORD STUDY: Thank you so much for bearing with me. I have been having some problems posting the spellings but I promise I am working on it.
